Dear Prescription Drug Abuse Group,
I think you guys had a great topic and I think you guys could write about the abuse of prescription drugs in professional sports. I think a magazine article would be great for this topic because it could reach a lot of people magazines such as ESPN and Sports Illustrated. You guys had a ton of research on how addictive these drugs are and how poorly they are monitored and I feel like this research could be applied very easily to the professional athletes being given these drugs and abusing them both during and after their playing career is over. The use of a magazine article would be great for conveying these facts in a short yet powerful manner and could be accompanied with pictures of famous addicted athletes and testimonials. In addition, most young athletes would be able to read about this abuse and better prepare for it and learn how to avoid it. The fact that young athletes always read these articles would make it so your magazine article could reach a lot of people and a lot of people would see and learn about this serious topic. John Olson Dear Advertisement group,
I think that you should make a video about how advertising works because I found that the visuals of your presentation was the most compelling part. Talking about how advertisements lie isn’t good enough. However, witnessing it in the form of an Old Spice commercial or a Calvin Klein ad is solid evidence that backs up the observations made about advertisements. By looking at visuals and hearing what advertisements are saying the audience is able to distinctly see how self esteem is targeted or how images move quickly to grab people’s attention. The difference between a logical persuasion ad and a nonrational influence ad can be clearly identified. There are however a couple of downsides to making a video. For starters, it is extremely time consuming and would require some mad editing skills along with loads of patience. This is why most people would probably stray away from this option. Additionally, there wouldn’t be much of a need for visuals when talking about why this kind of advertising is immoral or wrong. The only real need for video and images is to easily illustrate how advertisers are targeting people. It isn’t needed and perhaps isn’t useful for telling the why. Ultimately, a video would be a lot of work, but it would be unique and pretty cool - Rudy Diaz The Drug Debacle,
Ad group,
Like my title says, ads are powerful, so you guys should write about the affects on younger boys that ads have since your question was "how does marketing affect the self esteem of American men?" The way you should present your unessay is by creating a short story about different types of kids (male of course to focus on your question). For example, one of the boys can be one who sits in front of the TV and plays video games non stop while another can be an outdoorsy kid who doesn't like to watch much TV and show how their two different experiences with ads affects them growing up. Whether you're focusing on the mental side of it or the physical side of it is up to you. You guys did a great job in capturing my attention. I loved all the visuals which is exactly what you need for a presentation on advertisement so I don't think a magazine or newspaper article would work because it is a lot of writing and not a lot of pictures. I also didn't realize how little information that ads give. It is mostly just the celebrity or whoever it is, trying to make me feel a certain way about that product. They don't really give me a reason for why I should like that product. Way to go and best of luck on your unessays! Jocelyn Pitlick Advertisement group,
your presentation was very compelling, much like how a well-developed advertisement should be. The main question of your presentation was “how has advertising affected the self-esteem of men?”; however, for your upcoming unessay, I think you should write about the process of building ads to target specific groups of people such as men, women, old people, young people ect. I find this new topic compelling because each advertisement a person creates is specifically designed with certain characteristics to help it appeal to that targeted audience. I think the best way to portray this topic is through an online webpage. With a webpage, you have the ability to capture your readers’ attention and keep them interested because you can add pictures of advertisements, videos, and generally anything you want. You can also have a more organized delivery of your information through creating different tabs or links on your page that could bring you to different areas of interest. For example, one tab could bring the viewer to a page about the process of brainstorming ideas about the target audience. In this tab you could talk about what factors or traits they have to look at in their target audience to help create a compelling advertisement. In another tab you could talk about how the producers use these traits to structure the advertisement; perhaps the advertisement is geared toward appealing to older men…should they use a bright color scheme or a more neutral/”manlier” color scheme? Should the volume be louder than normal? Should the actors talk slower? Ect. Ultimately, I believe a webpage could be quite engaging for your audience which would keep them entertained, as well as interested and it would also allow you to include different forms of media, as well as charts, graphics, and designs. An online webpage has many versatile features and this would be the best way to convey your message or topic. -Jacob Pesek Dear Power of Advertising Group,
You should write about the need for men’s positive self-esteem campaigns in the form of an advertisement, because I, as part of your audience found this compelling because of the ethical issues in advertising today. I also think it would be so cool to do this unessay in the form of an advertisement because it parallels the theme, adding an ironic touch. What I got most from your presentation was the idea that advertisements geared towards men are derogatory and place men in a box with the expectation that they are muscular and attractive. The concept of advertising clothing for “curvy,” and skincare products for “anti-aging” are not foreign in the world of marketing for women. However, in the male world, expressing sensitivity to men who are not the perfect fit is seen as less “manly,” and therefore does not ever happen. I would love to see an unessay in the form of a magazine/newspaper/radio advertisement talking about why there are no positive self-esteem campaigns or even just products in general suited for men who do not have the exact ideal look, and I’m sure the guys that fit this category would too. -Frances Minigan Hello group that covered the power of sleep,
You should write about the power of sleep in a paper because I, as part of your audience found this compelling because of the dense amount of scientific research which would be much easier to grasp if the audience could in addition to hearing, view as well. Even though the presentation was great with great visuals and obviously well-research information, all that knowledge was lost unless the audience took good notes. In a paper your audience could casually remind themselves or study what they have learned. During the discussion period for your group I found it difficult to recall those different theories of dreams, pathways for the brain, and the historical studies conducted over sleep. Of course, if I had just taken better notes I would still have all that knowledge, however due to our assignment during the presentation and the fast pace of your delivery of information taking notes was a difficult task. My recommendation as an audience member is to provide your audience with a physical copy of your evidence in the form of a paper, so that your audience could consult the information at their own leisure, in order to retain the new gained knowledge. -Jesus A. Lopez Dear Jocelyn,
I would love to see you write about personal experience with drug abuse in the form of an interview because I found the account that you touched on in your presentation extremely compelling. The interview medium speaks so loud to the audience because we can actually hear the despair in their voice and it pulls the listener/observer into the story. Even your brief account about your friend who is struggling with prescription drugs, via text message, was gripping and I couldn’t hear or see any of the messages. Personally, I have never talked with someone who is battling drug abuse but I can only imagine how captivating it would be through speaking with them and hearing of the adversities they live with every single day. As one of your audience members, I know listening to an interview with a prescription drug abuser would force me to become empathetic towards their situation which is exactly the purpose of the unessay. The big difficulty with an interview is making it interesting. From a production point of view, the best way to do this is to have high quality audio and suspenseful breaks to let the listener digest the pieces of the story individually. You can’t go too fast in an interview, especially if it’s only audio, because it is very hard to follow. On the contrary, you can’t move so slow that it becomes boring and non-climactic. There is a trivial balance that you will have to find to create a dynamic interview that really draws the audience in. Combining a good production with an engaging interview will generate a passionate composition of what it is to live with prescription drug addiction. - Dawson Matthews Dear second forum group who discussed marketing and advertising:
I believe that you should discuss the psychoanalytical side of marketing in your Unessay through the use of a newsletter, simply because I found that to be the most effective part of your presentation and I believe a newsletter would portray it well. The most intriguing part of the forum presentation was how advertisers demonstrate all of their skill in multiple varieties of ways to draw in the observer's mind. The presentation made me come to a better realization that I too get drawn in by certain ads more than others because of psychological reasons, despite my efforts to be skeptical about the advertised products. It is pretty amazing to understand just how advertising affects the brain psychologically, and I believe an well-written newsletter would be effective and would be informative.k A newsletter seems to be a fitting medium because it reaches the general public easily since it is less formal than other mediums, and because newsletters are made to inform in an interesting and creative way. I feel like a newsletter would be a different and more interesting way to come across to your audience from just writing a typical essay, and I believe that if I saw a legitimate newsletter about the psychological aspect of marketing in the human mind, that I would instantly be adsorbed and would enjoy learning the new, interesting information you all have to offer. You definitely have a lot of potential for an incredible Unessay in the form of a newsletter, so use it. -Rory Loe |
