Dear Sleep Group,
First off, I wanted to say that I really enjoyed both your presentation and your discussion. You guys really opened my eyes to the powerful benefits and abilities of sleep, and I've since been trying to get at least 8 hours a night. However, it was the discussion that really broadened my horizons and made me think of this idea. I think you guys should do a survey across as many different races, ethnic groups, countries, cultures, etc. as possible with one simple question in mind: "How, and why, do you sleep?". After this is done, you should compile it into one short essay and/or newspaper article, taking the highlights from many of the responses and tying them together with all of the fantastic research about sleep you guys have already done.
This would this open people up to different cultures and allow people to see that regardless of how everyone lives their lives, everybody still has to sleep in a very similar way. This would also enable the general public to become more knowledgeable on different cultures and groups, as often how we sleep is very representative of both our cultural methodology as well as our socioeconomic status. Opening the common public up to both of these categories for a variety of different countries would really enable us to see cultural differences, as well as the effects of globalization in our ever shrinking world.
Finally, I believe you should do it in this sort of medium, either a short essay or a newspaper article, because it truly reaches the public in a format that would be interesting to read without taking too much time out of the day. This format, with such potent and insightful information, would make for a perfect discussion tool in day to day life, leading to the spreading of the information rapidly through one form or the other.
Hope you like my idea,
Luke Fanning
