Dear Mr. Duncan,
My name is Peter Jones and from Orinda, California. I have grown up attending stellar public schools in my area of Northern California and I have been blessed with amazing opportunities that not many people are as fortunate to have. The reason I’m writing to you today is because many kids, just a couple towns over from where I live, aren’t as fortunate as my friends and I and attend very sub-par public schools. Even just 15 minutes away from my house, there are schools with a majority of students that don’t go on and attend college let alone graduate high school at all. I’m not an expert, but I know that this is wrong and must be stopped. I believe that these kids should be given the same opportunities that I have.
Similar to the desegregation measures taken in the Normandy school district in Missouri, I think that a program similar to that should be implemented in areas similar to mine all over the country. The majority of the schools I have attended throughout my life and my community as a whole is mostly upper-middle class and white. Yes, I have plenty of friends that aren’t of my race, but all of them have been raised in a similar background as me. I think that implementing a similar desegregation program would benefit the less fortunate students and benefit my school and my community and other communities all over the country. I know this letter is short Mr. Duncan, but I believe that a program like this would benefit the entire country.
Sincerely,
Peter Jones
