In What Do Dreams Do for Us? Written by Ilana Simons who has a Ph.D. in clinical phycology, Ilana takes a stab at the five major theories as to why we dream and why it helps us. Similarly, Theories Abound to Age-Old Question: Why Do We Dream? Written by Dr. Angel Morgan attempts to shed some light on the same major question. Both articles agree that we believed that dreaming only took place in REM or rapid eye movement sleep, however, through further research its apparent that dreams do take place in the other phases of sleep they’re just shorter and less common. Furthermore, both articles believe that dreams have a physiological effect on the body in a positive way. For examples, we can dream up scenarios that scare us and run through them. They can be used to sort out problems and help store our memories by running through the events of the day and deciding what is worth saving and what is worth forgetting. Where the articles differ is beliefs that they have on why we dream. There are still many similarities in these; for example, some follow the same theory. However, Dr. Angel Morgan approaches her article through a more scientific light: she defines what dreaming while Ilana Simons just tries to share the most common theories of dreaming.
