Considering the amount of people who are constantly in my room in CM, I’d have to say that the design of my room is pretty empowering to me, my roommate, and our guests. The relatively clean and uncluttered look of the room encourages guests to come in and tells them that my roommate and I are not slobs. The multiple folding chairs on one side of the room under the lofted bed and the other waist high bed on the other side allows for plenty of lounging space, which is the main part of the room’s design that encourages guests, as well as me and my roommate, to stay in our room. The room also has a very calm and lively atmosphere. There is almost always a little background music playing, and vibrant conversations are common. This further empowers everyone to enjoy my room. The tucked-away desks and cabinets are also enjoyable and helpful for me and my roommate. The space and technology that comes with the desks are very useful for homework, and also allow for a slight separation between the guests and ourselves, which is often helpful.
Of course, there are some flaws in the design of our room that unfortunately tend to disempower both guests and my roommate and me. The largest flaw is most likely the small size of the room, which starts feeling crowded with about 10 people. This causes other potential guests to find other less crowded rooms to spend their time in. Another major pitfall to the room’s design and function is the lack of a fridge and snacks. Both the guests and the residents of this room enjoy snacks during the day, especially later at night a few hours after dinner. This encourages people to search for food in other rooms. If the room contained some snacks, more people, including myself, would appreciate staying to hang out and converse.
Aside from these two main flaws, just a couple smaller issues affect everyone’s enjoyment in my room. The clothes that my roommate and I hang around are one of these issues. They slightly detract from the clean look of the room, but since most other rooms contain much more clothes lying around, our room still looks rather refreshing. The other small issue is the lack of privacy for me and my roommate. It is often difficult to concentrate and work in the room because of the noise of people around. Even finding quiet time to nap is sometimes difficult.
Overall, I enjoy my room very much. Despite its few flaws, it works great for sleeping, working, and spending time with friends, which is basically what I spend the majority of my time doing, besides eating and attending class. The simplicity of the design may actually be the room’s greatest quality. As many have often said before me: “Less is more.”
