Hillary Clinton – She believes that the US embargo has not been successful and that Obama should reconsider. She also thinks that their focus should be more on Latin America.
Jeb Bush – He believes that restoring diplomatic ties was a mistake and that it threatens the chances of a democratic Cuba.
Ted Cruz – He does not want to lift the U.S. embargo and believes that the Castro’s only intentions are to preserve power.
Lindsey Graham – He thinks that the change in Cuban policy is a bad decision and he also wants to prevent the use of federal funds to help create a U.S. embassy in Cuba.
Bobby Jindal – He believes that this is only rewards the Castro’s and that it threatens the American people. He also thinks that this shows that Obama cannot lead on an “international stage.”
This presentation was really good about informing me of the history of Cuba and the Castro family. It also informed me of the current situation in Cuba and our relations with them. I can see how there is some debate on whether or not Obama made the right decision. To me, it seems like the right decision. As mentioned in class, lifting the embargo can help Cuba, but will barely make a dent in the issues they have. It was also mentioned in class that the Castro family will not be in power soon. I believe that this decision by Obama will only strengthen our ties and relations with Cuba.
