This research question explores the traditional interpretation of the American Dream and how it has drastically changed and doesn’t apply to our society, especially in this decade. The original meaning behind the American Dream emphasized the opportunity that the this country provided, whether involving current citizens or immigrants, though today it seems preposterous to think that it is as easy as moving to this country. In our generation, I’m sure we have heard of the term “white privilege”, conveying the belief that all (or the majority) of the white class are given more opportunity, whether it be wealth or any other perk. Initially, I thought it was sort of an over exaggeration, although looking at it through numbers, our group was astonished to see its truth, specifically economically. With such unbalance among our nation’s classes, should the American Dream be rewritten? I ask this because despite two different people of different social classes working the same amount, whether involving time or effort, the person of “higher class” will receive more. The American Dream involves the equal opportunity of all people, therefore not at all applicable today.
Through the research of our sources, I am eager to learn more on how and more importantly, how the Unites States transitioned to from a country with equal opportunity, to one with none at all. Also, I hope to discover why our US philosophy is not discussed and continues to stand. Are there factors that support this inequality among classes? Besides income, are there other unfortunate inequalities that are displayed in our society? Our group will strive to answer these questions to the best of our ability. I think it’s safe to say we are excited to share more with everyone after break!
