Am I involved on social media? Yes, I have accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Vine, but my activity on them primarily consists of reposting things that interest me rather than posting my thoughts and feelings. I am a very avid fan of sports teams, primarily the New England Patriots, so I follow their social media accounts. I also have come to really enjoy Thayne McCullough’s twitter account, so I will repost many of his “tweets.” I repost things so that I can look back on my profile’s page and see the things I’ve enjoyed most without having to search for each individual post. I have no ambition to share my personal feelings or opinions on social media, because they are permanent and if I ever change my mind on a topic, I would have no option to edit my previous post. To my audience, I’m sure I come off as a very inactive account who happens to really enjoy Thayne McCullough and the Patriots. Of course, this is not what my everyday personality is like, as that would be tremendously boring to only have two topics to ever talk about, but why would I want to put my whole life story out on Twitter or Facebook? That would be ridiculous and entirely revealing of personal information on the internet, making my personal identity accessible to millions of people worldwide. To wrap everything up, I enjoy social media and how it allows people to connect, but I don’t feel an obligation to invest my life in it.
Social media as a whole is neither good nor bad. It is a tool, and like any tool, it can be used for constructive and destructive purposes. More often than not, we see it being used by politicians, celebrities, and whiny teenagers to criticize others and complain about things in life that are often not even that big of a deal. But there is good to it as well, and simple little “hashtags” kick-start many positive social change movements that become worldwide in minutes on social media. Another benefit of social media is that it allows people to connect with friends and communities all across the globe and see what the world is up to.
