When choosing where to attend university I had to make a hard choice. I have a lot of very disparate interests, and deciding which one to focus on in university was very difficult. I had applied to film schools, schools with engineering programs, and schools with economics programs. These three subjects are all very close to my heart and interesting for me, and in the end I had to choose one of them to study. I chose economics, which I am loving, but I will never stop being intrigued by the other two. Because of my love for it, I decided to choose filmmaking as the medium for my second unessay.
Filmmaking is interesting because it has a lot of rules and conventions, but all the best films excel because they don't follow them. One thing that remains the same throughout all well made films is the process they used to make them.
The first step is pre production. In pre production, you generate an idea, and create a story. With this story you are able to make a script, choose who will help you produce the film, create a story board that will help plan out all the shots you need to take, and make sure you have all the gear and people you need for production.
During production you shoot the film. With proper pre production the production stage should go smoothly and you should be prepared for all issues that will arise.
Post production involves editing the film, receiving critique from others to help move the editing along, and then distributing the film.
I think film is a powerful medium because it is so engaging and easy to share. Film producers have so much control over what they show the viewer, so it allows a lot of creativity. Film is also a medium that allows me to share the stories I want to share most effectively. I think that it will be a fun way to finish my semester, working on such a fun project.
