Throughout our research, we want to delve into, money and power, race, and class. These are all very important subtopics to go over, and are interconnected with the wealth gap and the “American Dream.” Many people today believe in the idea of meritocracy. The idea that if one works hard enough, they can raise out of poverty and into success. During our research, we will show that meritocracy does not exist. People of lower class can work multiple jobs, including working harder than many upper class people, who may have inherited the wealth from their family. In reality, meritocracy and the “American Dream,” is used as an excuse to validate the extreme wealthy of certain individuals, and allow certain Americans to stay ignorant of their privilege. This is an important topic to discuss because if we open up the debate, we can become less ignorant of the certain privileges that individuals have, and we can achieve more equality.
