Where does the money colleges and universities make through athletics end up? In an article written by William Gonch this very question is answered. Gonch begins his article by introducing readers to the fact that universities spend a lot of money on athletes, while non-athletes get the short end of the stick. The article discusses a study done by the Delta Cost Project at American Institutes for Research, which found universities spend three to six times as much on athletes compared to academics for students. Specifically, the study found that schools in the Football Bowl System (FBS) spend on average $91,000 per athlete and $13,500 per academic student. The article moves on to talk about the rate at which athletic funding has increased, showing that many schools seem to value athletics over academics. The article touches on the University of Alabama, and how they make enough revenue to distribute some money back to academics. With it becoming such a financial burden to have all the sports teams, many schools have to reinvest revenue into sports to break even. Gonch concludes his article by informing readers that many NCAA Division I actually are not self-supported. Many schools use money generated from tuition to help pay for sports programs. Clearly if schools have to resort to using student tuition to pay for sports, something needs to change.

This article explains how universities have been using an increasingly large amount of student tuition on their athletes while spending less on their non-athlete students. I thought that you picked out the most important details that led to a clear thesis. I appreciated that you included how the spending has changed over time and also used specific colleges as examples to establish credibility.

1. Colleges and universities are spending massive amounts of students tuition to support the schools athletic programs, which in return is causing a decline in the schools academics.
