I chose for this summary to write an interpretive summary on the article “Friend Networking Sites and Their Relationship to Adolescents’ Well-Being and Social Self-Esteem”. I chose to write an interpretive summary for this article because this article contained many different interesting points and calculations which were used to make the conclusion that the authors came to. But along with this the article also appeared to have some bias which I think I needed to take into account on how I will use this evidence in our forum presentation. Stating both the positive and negative aspects of how social media was affecting the self-esteem of the subjects in the study.
As all of us are aware, social media plays a large role each adolescents’ lives today. Most adolescents’ today with access to social media are a part of one or many “friend network sites”. These sites include such things as Facebook, Twitter, etc. In the article “Friend Networking Sites and Their Relationship to Adolescents’ Well-Being and Social Self-Esteem” the authors attempt to determine if there is a relationship between the social media use of each of the adolescent’s participating in the study and their self-esteem. This correlation occurs through using a particular web site “CU2” and a set of measures which were predetermined by the experimenters, which included use of network site, frequency of reactions to profiles, tone of reactions to profiles, relationships established, social self-esteem, and well-being. The authors conducted the survey on 881 adolescents (10-19) and the results showed many positive and negative conclusions from social media use. From the results the authors were able to conclude that adolescents’ self-esteem was affected solely by the type of feedback to the profiles of the participants; for example, positive feedback enhanced the self-esteem and negative feedback lowered the self-esteem of the individuals.
This information appears to be an obvious conclusion of what we would imagine from a running a study in which you look at how positive and negative feedback on an account an adolescent has on a social media website. But the social self-esteem that occurred from this appeared to have a considerable correlation to the well-being of the individuals which will be pursued by our group for our forum presentation. This relates to our forum topic in that we are looking at the connection of social media to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and one of these needs is esteem, which shows how social media can how both a positive and negative effect on the esteem of an individual and may even fulfill the positive esteem needs.
